KSCR Review: Wolfmother’s sophomore effort could be the most controversial release in the storied history of KSCR, perhaps because, love it or hate it, this is exactly what was expected from what is now essentially an Andrew Stockdale solo project (He ejected the former members of his band ala Billy Corgan & The Smashing Pumpkins).

This isn’t challenging material, and it’s sure to be a hit with those who care for classic-rock revivalist, Zeppelin-worshipping bands. Indeed, the Jimmy Page penis-envy is quite evident here especially on second track, first-single “New Moon Rising.” “New Moon Rising” is a rock-radio-ready tune with a hard-edged guitar sound that wouldn’t feel out of place on any alternative or classic rock station. To their credit, Wolfmother achieves exactly what they aim for on this and other similar tracks, crafting catchy and simple tributes to the bands they idolized as teenagers. Sabbath comparisons are due on leadoff rocker “California Queen.” You get quality Rush-lite on track 7, “Cosmic Egg.” People are going to love or hate this for what it is. It might not deserve either. It’s simple, entertaining rock and roll, and it’s certainly listenable. It’s not the best music ever made, but it’s not the worst music ever made. Addendum: “Far Away” is actually a contender for worst piece of music ever made. Probably don’t play it. RIYL: JET, reading Rolling Stone, classic rawk
