KSCR Review:
Jemina Pearl was a member of Be Your Own Pet and now that they’ve broken up she and at least one of her former band mates have moved to Brooklyn to continue collaborating. The result is Jemina’s first solo album which is practically an antithesis to a lot of the girl pop out there. Yes, the songs are very tuneful and quite catchy as hell, but there’s a rawness to a lot of this record that the polished icons of pop would give almost anything to even remotely resemble. Attitude mixes with fun and even some sweetness. One of the highlights of the record is track 6 “I Hate People” which features Iggy Pop on guest vocals. Also check out track 4, “Band on the Run,” which is not a cover, for some good band attitude. Jemina Pearl may have a good voice, but she’s not a “good” girl. To quote the first lyrics of track 6 (“Looking For Trouble”): “Never sold my soul to the devil / gave it away for free.” Excellent stuff, and has broader appeal than simply the punk crowd. Anyone who likes good songs, good songwriting, catchy riffs, all packaged in mostly stripped down and basic guitar driven rock will like this record. So give it a try!
